Commonwealth Games: Okowa congratulates Enekwechi for winning gold medal

The President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has hailed the super performance of last night Nigeria’s two medalists in athletics at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Tobi Amusan.

While Enekwechi claimed his first gold medal in the shot put men with 21.07 metres, Amusan defied a knee injury in the 100m women’s hurdles final to win a bronze medal in 12:60sec.

Okowa, who congratulated Amusan and Enekwechi for their hard work and victory, said the federation remains very happy with their achievements to make the nation proud.

“I feel very excited watching the two medals events. I am happy Chukwuebuka delivered the gold medal as we begin the countdown to our medals target.

“Amusan is our ambassador, she has always delivered but for her injury, missed the gold. We are still proud of her. They were favourites in their events and I am happy the federation and the National Sports Commission have continued to support and motivate the athletes in camp to go for glory. I am confident we will win more medals in the track and field events”,Okowa stated.

The AFN boss commended the athletes in the Team Nigeria contingent to the games for their patriotism, dedication and discipline, assuring them that the federation remains very committed to their career growth and future.

Tonight, Ezekiel Nathaniel will race in the 400m hurdles men’s final carrying Nigeria’s hope for yet another gold medal.
