Court Adjourns Hearing in FCT Abandoned Sports Infrastructure Suit to 5th October
Justice M.G. Umar of Court 5, Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned until October 5, 2026, further hearing in a suit filed by the Gwagwalada Football Stakeholders against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over requests for information on abandoned sports infrastructure projects across the FCT.
The matter, which came up for hearing on Thursday, was postponed after proceedings, with the court fixing the new date for continuation of the case.
The suit, first mentioned in March 2026, was earlier adjourned to allow the FCT Minister to enter representation in the matter.
The Gwagwalada Football Stakeholders are being represented by Babatunde Akintade Legal Consult.
Speaking with journalists after the court session, lead counsel, Babatunde Akintade, said the suit seeks a court order compelling the FCT Minister to provide detailed information on abandoned stadium projects across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory.
“This matter was actually slated for hearing at the Federal High Court 5 involving the FCT Minister and Gwagwalada Football Stakeholders on the abandoned stadiums in the six Area Councils.
It is a matter in which we are pleading with the court to direct the Minister to provide us with all information relating to the abandoned stadiums in the six Area Councils,” Akintade said.
He added that although the matter had been adjourned, the stakeholders remained optimistic about a favourable outcome.
“The matter today has been adjourned to October 9, 2026, for further hearing. We are hopeful that by the next hearing we will get a declaration, and football stakeholders in the FCT will come out victorious in the matter,” he stated.
The legal action is aimed at compelling the FCT Administration to disclose information concerning sports infrastructure projects that have reportedly been abandoned across the six Area Councils, a development stakeholders say has negatively affected grassroots football and youth development.
Several football stakeholders from Gwagwalada and other parts of the FCT were present at the Federal High Court to witness the proceedings, reaffirming their support for the suit and their demand for greater accountability in the management of sports infrastructure across the territory.
