Enekwechi’s uphill journey ends in Commonwealth Games historic gold

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finally earned the major international title his career has long deserved after clinching the men’s shot put gold medal at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 32-year-old, one of Africa’s most consistent throwers over the past decade, secured his first major title outside the continent in dramatic fashion, edging a fiercely contested competition by just four centimetres.

Overcome with emotion after his victory, Enekwechi described the achievement as “surreal,” admitting he had often wondered if such a moment would ever come.

“I didn’t know if this moment was ever going to be possible,” he said. “I came into this competition with a lot of things working against me, but I just kept swinging. I never gave up. Sometimes persistence pays off, and today is proof of that.”

The victory crowned years of perseverance for the Nigerian, who has consistently competed among the world’s elite but had previously fallen short of a major global title beyond the African stage.

Enekwechi revealed that Glasgow’s difficult conditions made the contest even more challenging, with athletes battling cold temperatures, gusting winds and an unusual throwing circle that felt like competitors were “throwing uphill.”

“I was very concerned,” he admitted. “Fortunately, today was one of the better days weather-wise, but it was still cold and windy. At this stage of the outdoor season, you expect sunshine and warm temperatures, not grey skies and chilly conditions. It made it difficult to stay warm, and we were literally throwing uphill, which is almost symbolic of my career, it’s always been an uphill battle.”

Despite not producing his season’s best mark, Enekwechi stressed that victory, rather than distance, was the only thing that mattered on the day.

“The conditions just weren’t ideal,” he explained. “If you wanted a true measure of what we were capable of, you’d probably have to add some distance to today’s marks. But everyone faced the same challenge. We were all incredibly close throughout the competition. In the end, it was enough to win, and that’s what matters.”

The Nigerian said the Commonwealth Games title ranks above any personal best he could have thrown.

“Today, the distance didn’t matter. What mattered was winning the gold medal. The big throws will come, but this gold medal is far sweeter than any personal best I could have achieved.”

Enekwechi’s victory adds another gold medal to Team Nigeria’s growing haul in Glasgow and marks a defining moment in the career of one of the country’s most accomplished field athletes, whose resilience and determination finally yielded the international crown he has pursued for years.
