The Coal City is counting down. In exactly 24 hours, the streets of Enugu will thunder with footsteps as thousands of runners, from elite marathoners to first-time joggers, converge for the Enugu City International Marathon, an event organizers say will reposition the city on Nigeria’s sporting map.

With Saturday’s race now in sight, preparations have shifted into top gear. Banners line major roads, volunteers are being briefed, medical teams are on standby, and security operatives have finalized deployment plans.

For the Local Organizing Committee, the focus in these last hours is execution and precision.

“We are in the final lap,” a senior LOC official told journalists on Friday.

“Every department has been activated. From route certification and hydration points to traffic management and athlete welfare, nothing has been left to chance. Enugu is ready, and we are proud to host Nigeria and the world.”

The last major pre-race engagement took place today with a World Press Conference at the International Conference Centre.

Organizers say the briefing provided definitive answers on prize money, the elite athlete roster, race categories, final route details, and safety protocols. It also addressed logistics for media coverage, fan zones, and post-race activities.

Sponsors, government officials, athletics federation representatives, and members of the running community were in attendance.

The press conference is seen as the official curtain-raiser before gun time on Saturday.

“This is where we dot the i’s and cross the t’s,” the LOC added. “We want the public, the athletes, and our partners to have full clarity before we hit the road tomorrow.”

Friday in Enugu had the energy of a city getting ready for a festival. At training grounds and popular jogging routes, groups of runners were seen doing their last strides, stretching, and strategizing.

For elite athletes who arrived earlier in the week, it is about peaking at the right time. For amateurs and fun runners, it is about pride, fitness, and being part of history.

“This is more than a race for me,” said one of the registered 10km runners from Abuja. “It’s about representing my state, testing my endurance, and running through a city I’ve heard so much about. Enugu feels alive.”

International interest has also grown, with a handful of East African and West African runners confirmed for the 42km category, raising the competitive stakes.

The marathon fever has spilled beyond the athletics community. Hotels around the Polo Park and Nike Lake axis report increased bookings.

Food vendors, transport operators, and fashion brands along the route have branded spaces to tap into the expected crowd.

Community groups and schools are also mobilizing cheer squads, with drummers and cultural troupes expected to line parts of the course to keep energy high.

To manage movement, the state government, in partnership with the LOC, will release traffic advisories later today. Key roads along the race route will experience temporary closures on Saturday morning, with alternative routes provided for motorists.

The Enugu City International Marathon will feature two categories: 42km and 10km, Race packs have been distributed, bibs collected, and timing chips tested.

Medical teams, hydration stations every 2.5km, and ambulances will be stationed along the course. A post-race village featuring music, food, and recovery services is also planned to keep the celebration going after the finish line.

Organizers emphasized that the marathon is not just about competition. It is about health, unity, tourism, and telling a new story about Enugu.
