Team Nigeria’s Performance Director and Athletes Liaison, Victor Okorie, has praised the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) following the country’s impressive outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Nigeria finished sixth on the final medals table with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze.
Reflecting on the country’s nine-day campaign, Okorie credited the athletes’ determination and the Commission’s commitment to athlete welfare, preparation and high-performance development for the historic achievement. He specifically commended NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for creating an environment that enabled Nigerian athletes to compete with confidence, pride and belief on the international stage.
According to Okorie, the success recorded in Glasgow was the result of visionary leadership, strategic planning and sustained investment in the nation’s sporting programme. He noted that the athletes appreciated the renewed support from the Commission, adding that the confidence inspired by the leadership translated directly into outstanding performances across the various events.
The Performance Director also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Federal Government’s support for sports development, saying the Glasgow campaign demonstrated what Nigerian athletes could achieve when given the right backing. He described the Games as evidence of the positive impact of the administration’s commitment to revitalising sports in the country.
Okorie highlighted that Nigeria’s achievement was even more remarkable considering that Glasgow 2026 featured only 10 sports, almost half the number contested at previous Commonwealth Games, where athletes competed in about 19 or 20 sports. Despite the reduced medal opportunities, Team Nigeria still secured 10 gold medals, just two fewer than previous editions contested across nearly twice as many sports. He described the performance as “a triumph of quality over quantity, excellence over circumstance and determination over limitation.”
Looking ahead, Okorie urged stakeholders not to become complacent but to build on the momentum as preparations begin for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. He said Glasgow 2026 should serve as the foundation for a new era in Nigerian sports, calling for sustained investment, improved preparation and continued support to enable the country surpass its achievements on the Olympic stage.
Team Nigeria’s Glasgow 2026 campaign produced memorable moments across several disciplines, including Commonwealth titles, Games records, historic podium finishes, personal and season’s bests, as well as breakthrough performances from a new generation of athletes. The National Sports Commission is expected to consolidate those gains as it intensifies preparations for future international competitions, with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games now firmly in focus.
