I never advised soldiers to reject salary increase- Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has denied a report claiming that he advised Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections.

Obi described the report as false and misleading, insisting that he has consistently advocated improved welfare, equipment, protection and motivation for members of the Nigerian security forces.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday and titled, “I Never Said Military Should Reject Salary Increase,” Obi said the claim attributed to him was “entirely untrue.”

“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections,” Obi stated.

“This assertion is entirely untrue. My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering.

“I have consistently advocated for the adequate provision of equipment, motivation, and protection for our security personnel.

“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need.

“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority.”

Obi’s clarification comes amid growing political debates ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with politicians and political groups increasingly scrutinising statements attributed to major contenders.

The former governor of Anambra State has repeatedly made the welfare of security personnel and the broader state of Nigeria’s security architecture a key component of his political messaging.

He has also criticised what he considers inadequate government spending on critical sectors, including security, healthcare, education and infrastructure, while calling for greater accountability in the management of public resources.

Obi sought to draw a clear distinction between his criticism of security-sector failures and any suggestion that he would oppose improved remuneration for members of the armed forces.

He maintained that soldiers and other security personnel who risk their lives to protect Nigerians deserve adequate support and a government committed to their safety.

Obi stressed that those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern.

“Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” he said.

“Under my leadership, scenarios where our servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril will be eradicated.

“I implore the Nigerian populace to dismiss this misleading report. I remain committed to articulating a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.”
