The international coaches seminar currently being organised by Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) in conjunction with De Lads Boxing Promotions and Nigerian born United States of America based boxer Abimbola Osundairo entered Day 2 Sunday, December, 24,2023 with international technical officer, Yinka Adeoti taking the participants on corner care and professional and handwraps wash.
The well travelled officer took time to explain to the participants the role of corner care officer in boxing bouts.
She also lectured them on types of injuries such as laceration, swelling/ Hematoma and nose bleeding.
Adeoti was of the opinion that the NBB of C should have a corner care supervisor who will always ensure that the right wraps are used by boxers.
At the end of her interesting lecture, she carried out some practicals on wraps to the delight of the coaches.
Also former Light welterweight Commonwealth champion and one time No 1 contender to the WBC title, Segun Ajose also lectured the coaches on discipline and management processes in boxing.
According to him, coaches need to upgrade themselves through attending seminars and going for coaching course at the National Institute For Sports ( NIS) to enable them acquire more knowledge.
Ajose while lamenting the absence of quality coaches in the country since the retirement of veteran coaches; Joe Mensah and Isaac Ikhouria advised coaches to avoid ego issue.
” Coaching like teaching is a noble profession but they’re not being paid well. As a coach, you must have to manage your boxers well. Observe your fighters well and make sure they’re disciplined and part of that discipline is ensuring they attend trainings on time and limit their reckless life.
” Coaches should also go for refresher courses or avail themselves of the opportunity of going to NIS to acquire more knowledge. Don’t assume because you’re a former boxer turned coach, you know it all because it will never work and at the end of the day, it’s the young boxers that suffers”, he stressed.
Also in attendance at the Day 2 of the seminar is international Referee/ Judge, Belgian Daniel Van De Wiele who moderated the seminar and the President and Secretary General of the NBB of C, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo and Remi Aboderin and all the board members.
The seminar will come to an end today, Monday December, 25 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Surulere Lagos and all the registered participants will be issued with a certificate at the end of the day
