More States Register For Olympic Day Celebration

After initial one week postponement due to logistics, the 2026 Olympic day cerebration being organized by the Sports for All Commission arm of the Nigeria Olympic (NOC) will now hold on Saturday 4 June 2026 across the country according to the event organizers.
A press statement from the Chairman of the Sports for All Commission, Abdul Ibrahim through the Secretary, Mr. Augustine Odigie informed that more states have signified their intension to participate in the one day exercise by organizing it in their respective domain.
The participating states include, Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Kogi, Kwara, plateau, Ondo, Oyo and Taraba state.
The statement also revealed that the Lagos event which holds simultaneously with that of other states, will take place In front of the NOC Secretariat within the National Stadium, Complex, Surulere, Lagos starting from 7am prompt while T-Shirts will be shared on first come first served basis as there will be no reservations for anyone.
President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel has advised Nigeria’s to come out enmass on Saturday for the exercise which encourages healthy living.
Adding that the day is actually a special day set aside to promote Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
The international Olympic Committee stated that this year’s Olympic Day programme is focused on moving more under the slogan “Let’s Move” , which is aimed at encouraging people to be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day corresponding to the minimum time recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for good health.
It would be recalled that on 23 June 1987 the concept of anv Olympic day Celebration was launched by the IOC Sports For ALL Commission. It was to be a way of encouraging NOCs to celebrate Olympic Day.
The first Celebration was held over a distance of 10 km , with 45 participating NOCs.
Over the next year’s, Olympic Day was associated with Olympic Day Celebration all over the world and the number of participating NOCs swelled nearly 200-with many of them in Africa promoting the event’s universal appeal.
In 2009, after more than 20 years of global success, the Olympic Day Celebration adapted to the request of the NOCs.
Numerous NOCs continue to organize the traditional Olympic Day but have diversified their activities around three new pillars of “move, Learn and Discover”
The 2026 Olympic Day Celebration which is being organized by the Nigeria Olympic Committee in conjunction with the Sports For All Commission is expecting to be more successful in terms of organization and participation.
