Nigeria National Flag Football Teams Make Powerful Statement in Kenya

The Nigeria men’s and women’s national flag football teams made an emphatic start to the 2026 NFL Africa Continental Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, recording four impressive victories on the opening day to underline their credentials ahead of next month’s IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Africa’s reigning champions showed exactly why they remain the continent’s benchmark in flag football, with both the senior men’s and women’s teams producing commanding performances against some of Africa’s strongest opposition.

The Nigerian men’s national flag football team began its campaign with a hard-fought 13-12 victory over hosts Kenya, overcoming a spirited challenge from the home side in one of the most competitive games of the opening day.

The men’s team followed that performance with an emphatic 53-15 victory over South Africa, showcasing its explosive offense and disciplined defense to finish the day unbeaten.

The Nigerian women’s national flag football team were equally dominant, opening with a remarkable 73-0 victory over Ghana before delivering another commanding display in a 53-0 shutout win against South Africa.

Their two victories without conceding a single point reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as the defending African champions after lifting the inaugural women’s title in Cairo, Egypt, last year.

Nigeria’s dominance extended beyond the senior teams as the country’s future stars also impressed.

The Nigerian U-13 flag football team defeated Ghana 18-7 before completing a perfect opening day with a convincing 40-0 victory over Egypt, highlighting the depth of talent being developed through the Nigeria Federation of American Football’s grassroots programme.

The outstanding performances represent another significant milestone for Nigerian flag football, with the tournament serving as a crucial part of the national teams’ preparations for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

The championship in Germany will mark Nigeria’s debut on the world stage after both the men’s and women’s national teams secured qualification by winning Africa’s first-ever continental titles in 2025.

The Nairobi tournament has also been made possible through the support of the National Football League (NFL), which is sponsoring Nigeria’s participation by covering international travel, accommodation and tournament logistics for the national delegation.

With four victories from four senior matches and an unbeaten start across all categories, the Nigerian national flag football teams have sent a strong message to both their African rivals and the rest of the world.
