Nigeria Wrestling Federation Concludes Oklahoma Camp Ahead of World Championships in Astana
The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has concluded its open camp training programme in Oklahoma, United States, as Team Nigeria intensifies preparations for the World Wrestling Championships scheduled to hold in Astana, Kazakhstan, later this year.
Recall a few weeks ago, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, had sanctioned the open camp in the United States for foreign based athletes and those with visas
The training camp provided Nigerian wrestlers with valuable exposure and a competitive environment to sharpen their skills ahead of the global championship.
As part of the programme, the wrestlers had the opportunity to compete in dual meets against athletes from various NCAA Division I schools in the United States, giving the team a chance to test its strength against high-level opposition.
The camp was supervised by Nigeria’s Women’s Wrestling Head Coach, Akuh Purity, who guided the athletes through intensive training and competitive sessions.
Purity described the exercise as a valuable training and preparatory experience, noting that the exposure provided the wrestlers with an excellent opportunity to assess their current level and identify areas that require further improvement.
“We continue to intensify our training and remain fully focused on improving our performance. Recently, we participated in an open camp in Oklahoma, where we had the opportunity to compete in duals against athletes from other Division 1 schools.”
“It was a very valuable experience and gave us an excellent opportunity to assess where we currently stand.
“Following the open camp, we transitioned into a closed camp, where we are currently training. We are using this period to specifically address and correct some of the mistakes and weaknesses I identified during the open camp and duals.”
“The girls are working extremely hard, and we remain committed to making the necessary improvements as we continue our preparation.” Purity said.

With the World Championships drawing closer, the Nigerian team is expected to continue its preparations, with the coaching crew focused on improving the athletes’ technical, tactical, and physical readiness for the competition in Astana.
Nigeria’s wrestlers will also be hoping to end the country’s wait for a World Championship medal, having last recorded a podium finish in 2023. The team will be aiming to break the jinx and return Nigeria to the global wrestling medal table in Kazakhstan.
