NOC holds sports medicine seminar for female medics in Benin City

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), with the support of Olympic Solidarity, has commenced a Sports Medicine Seminar for Female Medics.
Themed: “Fueling the Female Champion: Understanding the Female Athlete Triad and RED-S in the Adolescent Athlete.”
The seminar, taking place from Tuesday, June 21, to Thursday, June 24, 2026, at the Media Centre, Binos Hotel and Suites, Benin City, Edo State, brings together female medical professionals from the South-South and Southeast regions of Nigeria to strengthen their capacity in female athlete health and sports medicine.
During the opening ceremony, the President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel plans to describe the programme as a landmark initiative and the first of its kind organised by the NOC specifically for female medics.
He will emphasise that the seminar will aim at improving knowledge and understanding of critical health issues affecting female athletes, particularly adolescent athletes.
The PNOC appreciates the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through Olympic Solidarity for supporting the initiative, noting that the programme demonstrates a strong commitment to athlete welfare, sports medicine education, and women’s empowerment in sport.
He further explained that the South-South and Southeast regions were deliberately targeted to ensure a wider geographical spread of the programme, with plans to extend similar initiatives to other regions of the country in the future.
The seminar focuses on enhancing participants’ understanding of the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), key conditions that affect the health, nutrition, growth, and performance of adolescent female athletes.
Participants would be encouraged to actively engage in the sessions and maximise the opportunity to acquire knowledge that will positively impact athlete care and development within their respective communities and sporting environments.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee reaffirmed its commitment to promoting athlete health and well-being through strategic education, capacity development, and collaborative programmes aimed at advancing sports medicine in Nigeria.
