Oyesade Olatoye reflects on disappointing hammer throw finish

Hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye expressed disappointment after missing out on a medal but insisted she remains motivated to return stronger after a challenging competition affected by difficult weather conditions.

Speaking after the event, Oyesade Olatoye admitted that her preparation had been excellent but said she struggled to find her rhythm on the day.

“I think my preparation for this competition was really great. Honestly, it was just my rhythm that was off today,” she said.

“Everyone is in the weather, so I don’t like to use excuses. I just wasn’t able to get a throw out. I had two throws in the cage that felt pretty good, so it’s a little disappointing, but I know it’s there and there’s more to come.”

The wet conditions also played a major role in the competition, with Oyesade Olatoye explaining that maintaining grip and balance became difficult throughout the event.

“Having the grip on the hammer and having our hands being wet throughout the competition isn’t the best. The ring is flooded with water, so it makes it tough to really have that grip throughout the ring as you’re pushing forward,” she added.

Despite the setback, the 29 year old thrower remained proud of her season and described the experience as motivation to improve ahead of future championships.

“I wish I was able to deliver the way I wanted to and the way I know I’m capable of, but I’m still proud of the effort and proud of my season,” she said.

With the Games now behind her, the multiple African Games medallist plans to take a short break before beginning preparations for the next season, which includes the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“I’m just going to take a few weeks off for the off-season, then get back to work and start full training,” she said. “I would have loved to finish with a medal because that’s always the goal, but I’m going to take some rest and reboot for next season.”

The 2022 African champion added that knowing a podium finish was within reach has strengthened her determination.

“I think it’s motivation. Knowing that the top three were definitely within range of what I could do, it motivates me. I don’t hang my head. I’m proud of Nigeria, all the supporters and everyone who has been cheering us on. I’m excited and ready to get back to work.”
