Same-Sex Relationship Case Involving Two Married Women Sparks Concern in Nigeria
A recent case involving alleged same-sex relations between two married women has drawn national attention, prompting concern from advocacy groups over rising social tensions and public reactions in Nigeria.
The Coalition of Youth for Good Governance in Nigeria has raised alarm over the situation of Idowu Veronica Nwajei, a Nigerian woman reportedly in hiding following threats linked to her sexual orientation.
According to available reports, Nwajei became aware of her attraction to women at an early age but concealed it due to prevailing societal norms.
Under family pressure, she later entered into marriage at the age of 39, despite ongoing personal struggles with her identity. While residing in Lagos, she allegedly maintained a secret relationship with another married woman.
The situation reportedly escalated on April 25, 2025, when the two women were discovered by the partner’s husband. The discovery led to a violent public confrontation, during which both women were allegedly assaulted and humiliated by a mob before managing to escape.
Following the incident, Nwajei is said to have gone into hiding, moving between locations in Lagos and Delta State.
Reports indicate that attempts were made to locate her, while her partner was allegedly apprehended. Fearing for her safety and possible legal repercussions, she subsequently fled.
The incident has reignited debate around sensitive social issues in Nigeria, including public safety, societal attitudes, and the handling of such cases.
The Coalition has emphasized the need for constructive national dialogue and called on the National Orientation Agency to strengthen public awareness and sensitization efforts.
Reaffirming its stance, the Coalition stated its commitment to addressing issues affecting citizens while promoting stability, awareness, and national development. It further urged the country to continue striving for peace, order, and progress for all.
