Special Eagles’ open camp in Abuja ahead of Amputee Football World Cup

Nigeria’s Amputee Men’s National Team, the Special Eagles, have officially opened camp in Abuja as preparations intensify for the 20th edition of the Amputee Football World Cup.

The development was disclosed by the President of the Nigerian Amputee Football Federation, Prince Opukiri Jones-Ere, in a statement made aavailable to our correspondent.

The highly anticipated event will be taking place in the religious city of San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico, best known as the home of a small image of the Virgin Mary called Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, from the 13th to the 22nd of November 2026.

Jones-Ere revealed that 15 players are currently in camp, while six additional players are expected to join the squad as preparations gather momentum.

The National Stadium, Abuja, is serving as the training base for the Special Eagles, who are determined to turn their challenges into inspiration as they prepare to fly Nigeria’s flag on one of the biggest stages in world amputee football.

The team’s training sessions are being closely monitored by Head Coach Dosunmu Gbenga and Technical Director Victor Onyekachukwu Nwenwe, who are working with the players to ensure they are adequately prepared for the global competition.

Jones-Ere expressed confidence in the team’s prospects, insisting that the Special Eagles are on course to achieve an unprecedented feat in Mexico.

“Training sessions are progressing well, and the players are in high spirits and fully committed to the task ahead.

“I am also pleased to report that the Technical Director and Head Coach are on ground, overseeing preparations and ensuring the team is on course for a successful campaign.

“We remain focused and determined to give our best as we prepare to represent Nigeria with pride on the world stage,” he stated.

The Federation is expected to intensify preparations in the coming weeks as the Special Eagles continue their build-up to the November tournament in Mexico.
