Tojemarine International Handball Championship Begins with Exciting Opening Day Matches in Lagos
The 2026 Tojemarine International Handball Championship tipped off on Thursday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Institute for Sports, Lagos, with teams across the male and female categories producing impressive performances on the opening day of the competition.
In the women’s category, SOOF Handball Club secured a hard-fought 32-28 victory over Seasiders Babes after taking a 14-11 lead into the break.
Flowers Handball Club also started their campaign on a winning note, defeating ASPAC of Benin Republic 26-21 in a closely contested encounter, having led 12-11 at halftime.
At the end of the opening day’s matches, Flowers lead the female division standings with two points and a +5 goal difference, while SOOF are second with two points and a +4 goal difference.
Seasiders Babes and ASPAC occupy third and fourth positions respectively without a point.
The men’s category witnessed equally thrilling contests as Delta Force defeated De Defenders 25-22 after establishing a commanding 17-11 first-half advantage.
Hosts Tojemarine Sport Club rounded off the Group A fixtures with a 32-28 win over Energie Handball Club.
The results see Tojemarine Sport Club top Group A with two points and a +4 goal difference, while Delta Force are second with two points and a +3 goal difference. De Defenders and Energie are yet to register any point.
In Group B, Niger United proved too strong for Bayelsa Waves, cruising to a 33-19 victory after dominating the first half 16-7.
The emphatic win puts Niger United at the summit of Group B with two points and a +14 goal difference, while Bayelsa Waves are fourth without a point. ASPAC of Benin Republic and Kalibi Handball Club are yet to play their opening matches in the competition.
