Tribute To Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu (1942-2024)

The world has lost a giant, a beacon of hope, and a paragon of excellence in Chief, Dr. Engr. Sir. Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, the esteemed President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and President of Owerri Peoples Assembly, who departed this world on July 25, 2024.
He passed away according to his family after a brief illness, at the venerable age of 82.
Born on September 4, 1942, in Atta, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s life was a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and philanthropy.
A civil engineer, industrialist, retired politician, and philanthropist, he understood early on that the private sector is the engine room of development.
He invested wholeheartedly in Nigeria’s economy, leaving a legacy of success and progress. His investments were vast, encompassing civil engineering, real estate, agriculture, manufacturing, health, media, and sports.
Through these ventures, he touched the lives of millions, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
Chief Iwuanyanwu’s impact did not go unnoticed. The nation honored him with its highest awards: Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). These accolades were a fitting tribute to his hard work, patriotism, and selfless service.
Chief Iwuanyanwu indeed fought a good fight, leaving indelible marks in virtually every sector of Nigeria’s economy. His influence was particularly profound in sports, through Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC of Owerri, and in media, through The Champion Newspapers. His flagship publication played a crucial role in Nigeria’s history, educating Nigerians on socio-political affairs and giving a voice to Ndigbo during challenging times. Champion Newspapers was not just a business; it was a crucible for talent, an incubator for future leaders.
Many, including myself, owe our careers to the opportunities Chief Iwuanyanwu created. As an office boy who rose to become a reporter, I saw firsthand how countless individuals were given chances to excel. His generosity and vision nurtured many who have since ascended to significant positions in government and other sectors.
Chief Iwuanyanwu’s legacy is a testament to the truth of Proverbs 11:25: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” His life was a continuous act of refreshing others, and his legacy will continue to prosper in the lives he touched.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, may the Almighty grant him eternal rest and peace among the ancestors.
