Ikoyi Club 1938 honour former leaders at gala nite

..As club rounds up 85th anniversary celebration

It was celebration galore Sunday as members of Ikoyi Club 1938 rolled out the drums to celebrate past chairmen and Board of Trustees members of the club as part of activities rounding up it’s 85th anniversary celebration.
The event which attracted many important personalities from all works of life, according to the chairman of the club, Tafa Zibiri-Aliu was in recognition of their meritorious service to the club which prized itself as the best social/ recreational club not only in the country but in Africa.
According to him, Ikoyi Club since it was founded 85 years ago, has been a pacesetter for similar clubs and it’s important they give award to those who have led the club in the past noting that the award is well merited.
“Our decision to give awards to our past chairmen and trustee members was in recognition of their being part of the success story of the club.
“The infrastructural development you are seeing in the club today were initiated by these great men who ensured that the ideals of the club’s founding fathers did not die and we the Executive members of the club, decided that we must show appreciation to them through award of recognition.
Vice Chairman of the club who also doubles as the chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Rufai Ladipo expressed confidence that the award will spur many people to give in their best when saddled with positions of authority in the club knowing fully well that their efforts will not be in vain .
He was particularly happy with the successful organisation of the weeklong anniversary celebration and challenged other clubs in the country to emulate what Ikoyi Club is doing.
Golf captain of the club , Wahab Aminu Sarumi was particularly happy that the club has helped in the country’s sports development noting that the first female golfer in the country was a product of the club.
The club also gave out awards to winners of the various sporting events organised by the eight sections of the club and other sports namely; golf, squash, tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming, aerobics and billiards/ snooker.
The event was spiced up with a documentary on the club, music and dance.
