WAFU Zone B Tourney : Flying Eagles qualify for CAF U-20, finals, despite losing to Burkina Faso
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria Sunday afternoon qualified for the CAF U-20 finals scheduled to take place in Ghana next year despite suffering a defeat by Burkina Faso in Yamoussoukro.
The Flying Eagles slumped 0-2 to the Young Stallions of Burkina Faso but still topped group B of the WAFU zone B tournament. Nigeria had earlier beaten Black Satellites of Ghana 4-2 before overcoming Hawks of Togo 3-0 in the group.
Nigeria and Burkina Faso moves to the Semi-final stages of the tournament and have both qualified for the African U-20 finals to be hosted by Ghana next year.
Nigeria has never beaten Burkina Faso at U-20 level as the Stallions won two of the four games they played and drew two scoring 6 of the 9 goals in their encounters.
On 16th August 2019 both teams drew 1-1; on 30th August 2019 Burkina Faso won 2-0; it was 2-2 draw on 11th May 2022 while the Stallions piped Flying Eagles by a lone goal on 18th October 2024.
Burkina Faso drew 1-1 with Ghana and beat Hawks of Togo 3-1.
Young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire topped group A beating Niger Republic 2-0 after a whipping of Benin Republic by 5-0.
The WAFU B semi-final will take place on Wednesday 5th August 2026 at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium. Yamoussoukro when Nigeria will lock horns with Niger Republic in the 1st Semi-final at 5pm and the Young Elephants of Ivory Coast will face The Young Stallions of Burkina Faso at 7pm in the 2nd semi-final clash.
