Yucateco Southwest Boxing Championship Set For Abeokuta
As part of efforts to discover and nurture emerging boxing talents in the region, Africa’s most structured boxing outfit Yucateco Boxing Promotions is set stage a first of its kind Southwest Developmental Boxing Tournament in Abeokuta.
The championship aimed at propelling a new generation of boxers will be held in the Ogun State capital in August 2026.
For the initiator and sponsor of the highly anticipated event, Hon. Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, who also serves as the Southwest Boxing Zonal Representative and Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) the tournament which will be held quarterly reflects his desire to develop and expose emerging talents in the squared ropes sports.
“This tournament is one I am immensely passionate about. It’s meant to serve as a funnel for grassroots talents to emerge and blossom in the sports.”
“The Southwest has produced great boxers for Nigeria in the past, the youth in the region are naturally endowed with talent for the sport, so, every investment in this project should be justifieable.” Imadu added.
The coordinator of the tournament, Osuolale Leye David, hinted that the event would be rotational, moving to other South West states with the facilities to host every 3 months.
He called on states across the zone to rally round their teams and give the necessary support; saying collective effort will take Southwest boxing to greater heights.
