Registration for the highly prestigious Lekki Scrabble Classics will begin on July 1 the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has announced.
The much sought after tournament which prides itself in giving out the highest individual prize-money has always attracted a high number of entries, serving more than a rendezvous for the game.
International players from different countries have found expressions at the annual tournament where strategies, techniques and honours are gained.
Unlike in the past editions where ceiling was placed on entries, this edition has been calibrated to receive as many participants as possible according to the organisers.
This move was to ensure players, regardless of their status are given the opportunity provided by the LSC to aim for more rating points ahead of international tournaments as well as gain access to premium hospitality.
LSC President Samuel Anikoh who broke the plans to the media on the latest instalment of the tournament revealed that, ‘we are pleased to announce that the annual Lekki Scrabble Classics will hold this year from September 26 to 27 and as such, we have decided to open the registration on July 1 which is about three months before the Classic dates. We believe this is an ample time for intending players to indicate and complete their registration process and plan ahead in good time,’ he continued, “for this year’s edition, we will allow as many players as possible to register. This time there’s no limit as it was in the past. Even the children will not be left out. It’s definitely going to be a whole new experience’, he emphasised.
Former World champion Wellington Jighere, Africa title winner Enoch Nwali as well as Ghana’s top star Charles Tachie-Menson and Nigeria’s rave of the moment Abdulmumin Jimoh have all graced the podium and etched their names as winners of one of the most competitive championship in the country.
