An Assistant Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Imo State, Chimezirim Lowell, has cautioned Nigerians against exposing themselves and their families to security risk and threats through careless use of social media, urging citizens to remain vigilant and take responsibility for their personal safety.
Lowell gave the warning while delivering a keynote address at a programme organised by the Royal Ambassadors (RA) of the Imo Baptist Conference at Good News Baptist Church, Ulakwo, in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.
The programme, held from Friday October 23 to Friday 25th October, 2026, with a theme, “Watch and Pray: Security Is Spiritual.”

The NSCDC officer stressed that security consciousness goes beyond relying on security agencies, noting that individuals must be observant, identify suspicious activities in their surroundings and take preventive measures against potential threats.
He cautioned Nigerians against indiscriminately sharing personal photographs, travel plans and details of their residential properties on social media, explaining that such information could expose them and their families to serious security risk.
Lowell also urged parents and guardians to strengthen communication with their children, establish family identification codes and warn them against following strangers.
He further advised children to report anyone who instructs them to conceal potentially harmful information from their parents or guardians.
Linking faith with practical security measures, the officer cited biblical book of Matthew 26:41, which urges believers to watch and pray, and Proverbs 22:3, which highlights the importance of recognising danger and taking precautions.
He also referenced Nehemiah 4:9, noting that the people combined prayer with vigilance while rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem.
According to him, “security is a collective responsibility that requires the active involvement of individuals, families, religious institutions, schools and communities” he stated.
Earlier, the Director of Royal Ambassadors, Imo Baptist Conference, Deacon Counselor Timothy Nwaezchukwu, declared the programme open and delivered the welcome address.
Speaking on behalf of the organisation’s leadership and members, Nwaezchukwu thanked Lowell for sharing his professional experiences and security knowledge with the young people.
He said, the presentation demonstrated the NSCDC officer’s commitment to youths development, community safety and national security.
The RA Director added that the lessons from the address would extend beyond the programme, emphasising the need for participants to translate security awareness into practical action.
The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of an award to Lowell by the Royal Ambassadors in recognition of his significant contributions and partnership with the organisation.
