Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Karate Championship Set for Abuja, Serves as UFAK Championship Qualifier

The Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Karate Championship is set to take place from Thursday, August 20 to Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the Velodrome, Package A, MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The championship, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria and the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), is expected to bring together some of the country’s finest karate athletes for three days of competitive action.

The competition has been designated as a KFN Ranked Event – Factor 6, making it an important event on the national karate calendar and an opportunity for athletes to improve their rankings while competing at a high level.

Beyond the competition itself, the Japanese Ambassador’s Cup will also serve as a qualification event for the African Karate Championships (UFAK), scheduled to hold in Algiers, Algeria, from September 6 to 13, 2026.

The championship is therefore expected to attract significant attention from athletes, coaches and officials, as competitors battle not only for honours at the Japanese Ambassador’s Cup but also for the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the continental championship.

With the partnership between the Japanese Embassy and the Karate Federation of Nigeria, the event is also expected to further strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and Japan through the development and promotion of karate.

All roads therefore lead to the Velodrome, MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, from August 20–22 as Nigeria’s karate community gathers for the Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Championship.
