LAKE PLACID 2023 FISU WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES DELEGATES TO VISIT REGION SEPTEMBER 12-16
Four months ahead of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games, representatives from several of the countries participating in the Games will travel to Lake Placid and the Adirondack region for a Head of Delegations (HoD) Meeting.
Until this visit, scheduled for Sept. 12-16, 2022, the ability of delegates to see the Adirondack region has been limited primarily to virtual tours, due to the global pandemic.
The regional visit will provide delegates with an opportunity to meet with the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games’ Organizing Committee and tour the venues where their collegiate athletes will compete, live, and train during the Jan. 12-22, 2023 winter multisport competition and educational festival.
The countries expected to send representatives include Japan, Thailand, Czech Republic, Germany, Korea, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands and Sweden.
“The HoD meeting brings together representatives from the competing nations, the Organizing Committee and FISU to learn more about the area and venues, and discuss overall Games’ planning,” said Ashley Walden, executive director of the Adirondack Sports Council, the Organizing Committee for the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games. “We are excited to welcome this group and highlight all the work that has been accomplished to date in preparation for January.”
International University Sports Federation (FISU) director of the International University Sport Federation’s Winter Universiade Milan Augustin added, “The HoD meeting is one of the most important meetings to prepare the FISU Games. I consider this meeting to be a milestone to improve the overall organization based on delegation needs which you can only get from their great experience. I believe that all participants in the HoD meeting and later in the FISU Games are craving to discover the famous Lake Placid (and Adirondack region), which is unique for having organized the Olympic Winter Games on two occasions and already one time the FISU World University games in 1972, but also for the kindness and friendliness of its residents.”
The 11-day Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games is expected to attract more than 2,500 collegiate athletes and delegates from some 600 universities across 50 countries. The competition consists of 12 winter sports contested throughout New York’s Adirondack region, including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Wilmington, North Creek, Canton and Potsdam.
While in Lake Placid and the surrounding Adirondack region, the international delegates representing 21 nations will visit competition venues, including Lake Placid’s Olympic Jumping Complex; the Olympic Center including the James C. Sheffield Olympic Speed Skating Oval, Gore Mountain’s snowboard courses in North Creek; university ice hockey arenas in Canton and Potsdam; Saranac Lake Civic Center’s curling venue; Wilmington’s Whiteface Mountain Alpine trails and Lake Placid’s new Nordic ski and biathlon complex at Mt Van Hoevenberg. They’ll also tour athlete living quarters and dining facilities at Paul Smith’s College, Northwood School, and SUNY Potsdam.
