NBBF U-18 National Tryouts Attract Over 500 Young Athletes Across Nigeria
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has recorded a successful start to its nationwide U-18 talent identification program, with more than 500 aspiring basketball players participating in simultaneous tryouts held in Benin City, Lagos, and Abuja.
The initiative, designed to identify and develop the next generation of Nigerian basketball talent, attracted young athletes from across the country seeking an opportunity to represent Nigeria at future international competitions and potentially earn a place within the D’Tigers and D’Tigress pathway.
Speaking on the success of the program, NBBF President, Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, described the turnout as a strong indication of the immense basketball potential that exists throughout Nigeria.
“This is a landmark moment for basketball development in Nigeria. The overwhelming response to these tryouts demonstrates both the passion for the game and the abundance of talent that exists across our nation.”

Also speaking on the initiative, National Teams General Manager, Musa Adamu, highlighted the importance of establishing a structured and transparent player identification process for the country’s national teams.
“The objective of these tryouts is simple: identify the very best young basketball talent across Nigeria and ensure they have access to opportunities within our national team development system.”
“We are building a comprehensive talent database that will strengthen our U-18, U-19, D’Tigers, and D’Tigress programmes. Our goal is to ensure that no talented player goes unnoticed because of geography or lack of exposure.”
“The quality of talent on display has been encouraging. This process goes beyond selecting players for immediate competitions; it is about building a long-term pipeline that will sustain Nigerian basketball at the highest level for years to come.”
The NBBF technical team will continue evaluating participants from the various centers as part of a broader strategy to identify, monitor, and develop elite young players capable of representing Nigeria on the continental and global stage.
