Prof. Dozie harps on alternative funding sources for Nigerian universities

The outgoing Vice Chancellor of Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, (KOMU), Ideato, Imo State, Professor, Okechukwu N. S. Dozie has emphasized the need for diversification of funding sources for universities in the country stressing that over reliance on traditional models of funding through government subventions is no longer sustainable.
Professor Dozie who made the assertion Tuesday during his valedictory press briefing held at the KOMU Liaison Office, Owerri posited that varsities must deliberately explore alternative sources of revenue and depend less on the usual handouts.
He identified and recommended commercial ventures, partnerships, consultancy services and structured financial support systems such as scholarships and educational loans as possible alternative revenue sources.
The immediate past KOMU vice chancellor also recommended the deepening of university-industry collaboration as one of the strategic imperatives for rediscovering the vision and mission of universities.
His words, “Over reliance on traditional funding models is no longer sustainable. The university must aggressively explore alternative revenue streams-commercial ventures, partnerships, consultancy services and structured financial support systems such as scholarships and educational loans.
“No university thrives in isolation. Strong partnerships with industry, government and communities are essential for innovation, relevance and impact. These collaborations must be structured, sustained and mutually beneficial.”
Dozie urged the university to invest in human capital development through continuous, mentorship and motivation of staff must remain a priority as no institution can rise above the quality of its people.
While commending Governor Hope Uzodimma for finding him worthy to serve as well as supporting his administration in the last five years.
Prof. Dozie thanked his family, staff, friends and associates for their support during his days at KOMU.
Dozie who will be moving to assume duty as the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, on June 18, 2026 expressed optimism that KOMU will continue to rise on the solid foundation already led by his administration as the 1st substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
