Youth Olympics: Nigeria’s beach volleyball team suffers setback, lose to Netherlands

Africa’s hopes of winning a beach volleyball medal at the ongoing 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, have suffered a major setback following Nigeria’s elimination in the women’s quarter-finals.

Nigeria’s last remaining representatives in the competition, Pamela Bawa and Joy Lawrence, were unable to overcome the Netherlands’ Matilda de Groot and Jara Both, losing 2-0 in sets.

The Nigerian pair, who had carried the continent’s remaining medal hopes following the earlier exits of other African teams, struggled against the Dutch combination, going down 14-21 in the opening set before suffering another 21-16 defeat in the second.

The Netherlands sealed victory in 34 minutes, winning both sets to book their place in the semi-finals and bring Nigeria’s beach volleyball campaign to an end.

Bawa and Lawrence had reached the quarter-finals after an impressive victory over Egypt and Thailand in the preceding round, raising hopes of a historic medal for Nigeria and Africa.

However, their defeat means the continent’s quest for a podium finish in beach volleyball at Dakar 2026 has come to an end, leaving African teams to reflect on a campaign that ultimately fell short of a medal breakthrough.
