2027: Nothing must happen to Peter Obi – Ejiofor, Rights Lawyer

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Anambra State-born human rights lawyer and lead counsel to IPOB, has urged President Bola Tinubu, to protect Peter Obi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ejiofor made the call in a statement titled “Weekend Musings: Nothing Must Happen to Peter Obi,” on Saturday, following comments reportedly made by Obi during an interview on Arise TV.
Ejiofor stated that Obi’s expressed concern about his personal safety, and whether he would remain alive until the 2027 presidential election should not be dismissed as ordinary political rhetoric.
He referenced recent incidents involving opposition political activities, including the reported obstruction of Obi’s convoy during a visit to Benue State.
Ejiofor acknowledged that different accounts of the incident had emerged, noting that the Police had confirmed Obi’s visit and the presence of security personnel.
The lawyer urged authorities to investigate reports of intimidation, threats and obstruction of political activities without treating unverified allegations as established facts.
Ejiofor added that the legitimate political candidates should be able to campaign freely and reach voters, while citizens should have the opportunity to hear and assess competing political messages.
“The political space belongs to the Nigerian people; it does not belong to any governor, political party or presidential candidate,” he said.
He urged the Federal Government, security agencies, INEC, political parties and state authorities to work towards a peaceful electoral environment where political disagreements are resolved through the ballot and the law.
Ejiofor further warned that any serious incident involving a major political candidate could have wider consequences for the country’s electoral process.
“Nigeria must not wait for blood before rediscovering the value of peace,” he said.
