Mmesoma Umeora, a 23-year-old young woman from Uga in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been found dead in Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, days after she was declared missing.
Mmesoma’s death has been linked to her ex-boyfriend, identified as Chima Ofoeke, an indigene of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State residing in Uga, who has also confessed to the crime after earlier denying knowing her whereabouts.
The suspect’s confession was corroborated by a video currently trending on social media showing him on handcuffs in a security van he was being interrogated by security operatives shortly after his arrest.
Reports have it that the 23-year-old Mmesoma got missing on Oct. 16, 2026, days after which her body was later discovered in a sack bag dumped inside a gutter along the Okigwe-Oba Expressway in Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area.
Discovery of Mmesoma’s body was reportedly made possible following a community alert issued about her missing, in response to which a good-spirited commercial motorcyclist (Ọkada rider) reportedly came forward to identify himself as the person who conveyed Mmesoma to Chima’s residence on the said date she got missing.
This was after the suspect had initially denied knowing her whereabouts.
The Ọkada man’s revelation resulted in the security operatives arresting and seriously interrogating the suspect (the ex-boyfriend), who eventually admitted inviting the deceased to his residence on Friday, Oct. 16, the day she was reported missing.
“I invited her and killed her because she broke up her relationship with me,” he confessed.
Following the confession, Chima thereafter led the security operatives to the place where she stuffed Mmesoma’s body inside a sack bag and dumped her in a gutter along a lonely and bushy axis of the Okigwe-Oba Expressway in Unubi community.
Police Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, Spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday, saying the suspect was arrested following a report by the victim’s mother to the Divisional Police Officer of Umuchu Division.
He disclosed that operatives, acting on intelligence-led information and working in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, apprehended the suspect identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.
Ikenga said the State Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, had directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation aimed at ensuring that justice is served.
The police spokesman added that the Command remained committed to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to promptly report missing-person cases and other suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
He stated that further developments would be communicated as investigations progressed.
