Kwara Utd end 49 year trophy drought, win President Federation Cup

..As Rivers Angels survive Nasarawa scare to take 10th women title

NPFL side Kwara United, Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena ( Onikan), Lagos ended their 49 years trophyless run when they won the 2025 edition of the President Federation Cup.

The Coach Tunde Sani tutored side achieved the feat by defeating NNL side, Abakiliki FC by 4-2 penalties after their game ended 0-0 at regulation time.

Both teams approached the game with all seriousness it deserves, displaying good football artistry to the delight of fans but none of them was able to get a goal till the end of regulation time with the winner decided by penalties.

Speaking after the match, coach of Kwara United Tunde Sani, said he was overjoyed that the team won their first domestic trophy under his guidance just as he commended their opponent for giving them a run for their money

” I’m highly excited with this victory because for 49 years, the team has not been lucky to win any domestic title and winning it will ever remain memorable to me

” Kudos must also go to giant killers, Abakiliki FC. The team is young, strong and tactically good and they really gave us a good challenge which made fans enjoy the finals of the oldest football competition in the country

In his remarks, Coach of Abakiliki FC Ifeanyi Onyedika ( MON) said his boys played well but were unlucky to miss two of their spot kicks that gave the trophy to Kwara United

With this result, Kwara United will represent the country in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup

Meanwhile, in the women finals, Rivers Angels came from two goals down to defeat Nasarawa Amazons by 6-4 penalties to be crowned champion for the 1Oth time

The defending women champions were stunned by their opponent who led by 2-0 at the end of the first stanza but the girls from Rivers State came back strongly in the second half to cancel out the goals, dragging the game into penalty shootout which they eventually won
