Imo Sports Commissioner Onyeocha thumbs up state’s sportsmen, women

Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha has commended Imo State sportsmen and women for achieving great feats in various sporting activities in national and international competitions .

Onyeocha made the assertion last week during a press briefing with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

He remarked that Imo athletes have been performing exceptionally in several national outings to the glory and pride of the state pointing out that Imo athletes won nine(9) golds out of 14 during the South East Zonal Elimintation games.for the National Sports Festival, NS.

The commissioner expressed optimism that Imo athletes will come out victorious with more gold in the coming National Youth Games slated to commence on August 25, 2025.

He recalled that Imo garnered a total of six(6) gold, 12 silver and a total of 48 medals in the recently concluded Niger Delta Sports Festival, NDSF as well as produced seven(7) players of the Super Falcons female football team that won the 10th WAFCON title for the country.

Onyeocha who further disclosed that Imo produced two(2) players of the D’Tigress Handball that won the African championship adding that the Under-17 of Heartland FC, currently in Abia State are showing signs of greatness having played five matches, lost none but drew one.

“I’m 100 percent sure they will go far with the pace they are doing. We are keen about development of grassroot sports. My Ministry recently sponsoredthe Under-19 sports competition and we were able to discover 55 fresh talents we are going to harness,” he said.

Concerning the relegation of Heartland FC, Onyeocha assured that Governor Hope Uzodimma, in his wisdom, will know and tell of the next line of action with the club pointing out that the governor’s decision on Heartland FC will be “the best for the state.”
