Andrew Uwe named 2nd Ambassador of Senate President Unity Cup

The Grassroots Sports Federation, South-South [GRASOF], in partnership with the Office of the President of the 10th Senate, has announced the appointment of retired Nigerian footballer and former national team captain, Andrew Uwe, as an Ambassador for the 10th Senate President National Unity Cup scheduled to hold in Akwa Ibom State.
The appointment recognizes Uwe’s lifelong commitment to grassroots football, leadership, and youth development — values that sit at the heart of the Unity Cup mission.
Born in Lagos and discovered through the Principals Cup and YSFON competitions, Uwe rose through Igbobi College and the University of Ibadan before leading Nigeria to continental glory.
As captain, he led the Flying Eagles to win the 1985 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and a historic 3rd place finish at the 1985 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
He also represented Nigeria at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations final, the 1990 AFCON final, and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
His professional career spanned Nigeria, Belgium, Germany, and the USA, with notable achievements including promotion to the 2. Bundesliga with VfB Oldenburg in 1996.
Since retiring, Uwe has transitioned to coaching with a German Elite License and UEFA B License.
He has worked with youth teams in Germany and, since November 2020, serves as Head Coach of Vandrezzer FC Academy in Nigeria, where he mentors the next generation of talent.
