Abua Cannis, Others Win Dr. Odumosu Olusola Tennis Championship.
A top member of the 2026 Nigeria Davis Cup team, Abua Cannis on Friday emerged Champion of the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps of the FCT command, Dr. Odumosu Olusola Tennis Championship held at the Tennis courts of the Moshood Abiola, National Stadium, Abuja.
Held from 21-24 April, 2026, the male and female championship attracted large entries that saw top ranked national players struggling to break even.
Prominent among them is the eventual winner of the men’s senior category, Abua Cannis, a member of team Nigeria Davis Cup squad that defeated Uzbekistan in the group two qualifier held in Lagos recently.
Playing in the final on Friday,
Abua defeated Lucky Danjuma 2-0 to emerge champion and ran home with the Dr. Odumosu giant trophy.
The tournament was organized in honour of the birthday celebration of Dr. Odumosu Olusola, the FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ), whose birthday was on Friday 24 April.
In his speech at the grand finale Dr. Odumosu thanked all his well wishers, stake holders, friends and others that were present at the occasion.
As a sports enthusiast, Dr. Odumosu, said he decided to celebrate his birthday with the tennis young talents as a way of promoting sport within the FCT.
And not only that, it is another avenue for him to encourage the young ones and grassroot participation in sports and youth development.
‘1t is actually intensional and aimed at encouraging youths in terms of their sports carrier
progression globally, adding that the championship was all about youth development; positing that was why the tournament was deliberately centred on the U-16 boys and girls and senior category.
“The under aged category was to catch them young
and give them the opportunity of being identified and sponsored”, he stressed
Continuing, Dr. Odumosu said the tournament isn’t going to be a one-off thing. And having started this competition, he assured that the championship has come to stay if God keeps him alive.
He also encouraged well meaning Nigerians, corporate organization and stakeholders to start investing in sports as a means of empowering Nigerian youths; saying ‘if they can come together and pull their resources together and encourage the young ones, the country’s sports will be better than it is at present.
He said there are lots of people out there to be discovered but don’t have the platform to showcase their talents but programmes like this will do the magic.
Meanwhile, all the winners and runners- up in various categories got cash awards, medals and trophies while the champions smiled home with giant trophies courtesy of Dr. Odumosu Olusola, the Commandant, FCT Civil Defence Command
