Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev Alfred Adewale-Martins has warned the federal government to do something to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians, even as he decried the recent increase in electricity tariff and pump price of fuel.
Delivering his homily today at Holy Cross Cathedral in a mass which the National Association of Catholic lawyers used to give thanks to God for the new legal year, Adewale-Martins warned of the negative impacts of some of the decisions of government on the suffering masses who are still reeling in the pains brought about by Covid-19, insecurity, banditry and menace of herdsmen that has led to the shortage of corn across the country.
He pointed out that increasing VAT, stamp duty, electricity tariff and pump price of fuel in the name of deregulation, even with the economic hardship brought about by Covid-19 makes one to be tempted to give up on Nigeria.
The Catholic Archbishop noted that if the cost of governance and corruption as seen in places like the NDDC are reduced, Nigerians would feel the impact of government more positively.
Despite the situation, Adewale-Martins charged Nigerians not to give up on the country but storm the heavens with prayers.
In his words: “The situation of things in Nigeria is becoming more and more difficult that one is tempted to give up on the country. Giving up appears to be the attractive choice, but we can not give up on the country. We just have to use whatever platform we have to warn on the negative impacts of the decisions being taken by government…we have to storm the heavens with prayers because with prayers we can do much more. Prayers change things…we must pray for God to take charge and for those in government to think out ways of making the burden of living in Nigeria a little lighter.”
Adewale-Martins further charged christians to show true love as St Paul admonished in the scriptures…(Romans 13:8) pointing out that the debt a christian owes his neighbor is the debt of love. He stressed that no one is beyond redemption…”let’s keep correcting and helping people to change and attain salvation.
