Mbomuzo Amainyi 2026: Ancient Clan Celebrates Culture, Unity and New Traditional Year in Grand Style

The ancient Amainyi clan in Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State and its environs came alive last Thursday as the people celebrated their 2026 Mbomuzo Cultural Fiesta with pomp, pageantry and a colourful display of rich traditional heritage.

The annual festival, which marks the end of the traditional year and ushers in the beginning of a new community calendar, attracted sons, daughters, friends and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond.

From both sides of the popular 7½ Junction along the Umuahia–Ishinweke Express Road, there was a hive of activities as businesses flourished, musical performances filled the atmosphere, and youths adorned in colourful traditional attires danced and celebrated.

Traffic congestion along the route reflected the massive turnout as Mbomuzo Amainyi once again proved to be a cultural spectacle.

The Eke-Ikpa Amainyi Market Square served as the central venue for the festival, attracting an unprecedented crowd of dignitaries, traditional leaders, age grades, women groups, youths and cultural associations.

The various age grades, youths and women groups displayed impressive cultural outfits, accompanied by traditional drums, flutes and dances, showcasing the hospitality, entertainment and identity of the Amainyi people.

Before the main gathering at the market square, the three traditional rulers who are custodians of the cultural heritage of Amainyi stepped out from their palaces and trekked to the venue.

They included HRH Eze Pharm. Emeka Ogbonna (Eze Ohazurumee, Inyi 3 of Amainyi), HRH Eze Kelechi Okeke (Awa 1 of Umuawaeke Amainyi), and HRH Eze Martins Keke (Opara na Dim 1 of Amainyi Nta).

It was a spectacular sight as youthful Eze Emeka Ogbonna led a large entourage on a trek of over four kilometres to and from his palace to Eke-Ikpa Market Square.

The procession featured musical drummers, masquerades, Okonko cultural dancers, beautifully dressed women, men of honour and various age grades.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as the three royal fathers eventually converged at the venue where the people had gathered for the cultural celebration.

In his royal address, HRH Eze Martins Keke, Opara na Dim 1 of Amainyi Nta, expressed delight over the massive participation of the people and stressed the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage and traditional practices of Amainyi.

He noted that festivals such as Mbomuzo provide an opportunity for the people to celebrate their customs, language, music, dance and communal values.

“These are treasures that define us as a people and distinguish us among the nations of the world. Through festivals such as Mbomuzo, we strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peace and foster unity within our communities,” he said.

Eze Keke commended the planning committee for its commitment and patriotism, noting that the activities reflected the theme of the 2026 Mbomuzo Festival: “Igwe Bu Ike – Clearing the Path to a Prosperous Amainyi Ancient Community.”

Speaking with journalists, HRH Eze Pharm. Emeka Ogbonna described the 2026 Mbomuzo Cultural Festival as a huge success, expressing happiness over the unity displayed by the three autonomous communities that make up Amainyi ancient kingdom.

“I am so excited that the three autonomous communities that constitute Amainyi ancient kingdom were united in making the cultural heritage a big success. Everybody is happy and the attendance is impressive,” he said.

The traditional ruler praised the contributions of Umuada (Umu Okpo), age grades, youths and the entire community for their sacrifices towards the success of the festival.

He specially appreciated Chief Kelechi Nwaoba, Akajimba 1 and Ide 1 of Amainyi, for delivering what he described as a world-class socio-economic lecture on a roadmap for collective and accelerated development of the ancient clan.

According to Eze Ogbonna, the lecture produced a strategic economic direction capable of transforming rural community development in Igboland and Nigeria.

He thanked God and the ancestors for their protection throughout the festival, adding that the peaceful celebration without any negative incident showed the global acceptance of Mbomuzo Amainyi.

Explaining the reason behind the energetic trek from his palace, Eze Ogbonna attributed it to divine grace, ancestral blessings and the importance of physical exercise.

“For years now, I eat once a day. It gives me strength and it is very good for my health. Trekking is also a very good exercise for healthy living,” he said.

The royal father explained that Mbomuzo represents the traditional way Amainyi celebrates the end of its year and welcomes a new one.

“It is also a period of thanksgiving to God and our ancestors for protecting us and providing for us throughout the year. We pray for guidance, protection and prosperity in the coming traditional year,” he stated.

He emphasised that peaceful coexistence, brotherly love, happiness and unity of purpose remain essential ingredients for development.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the 2026 Eke-Ngu/Mbomuzo Amainyi Cultural Festival, Chief Charles Obilo, KSJI, expressed appreciation to all personalities, groups and stakeholders who contributed to the success of the celebration.

Obilo described Mbomuzo as a cherished cultural festival symbolising the rich heritage, unity, resilience and enduring values handed down by their forefathers.

“Today, as we gather in joy and harmony, we celebrate not only our customs and traditions but also the spirit of brotherhood that has sustained our people through generations,” he said.

He urged the people to continue promoting peace, mutual respect, hard work and community service, which he identified as foundations of Amainyi’s growth and prosperity.

The festival also featured presentation of merit awards to distinguished sons, daughters, wives, groups and associates of Amainyi, alongside Okonko cultural dance, masquerade displays and a traditional wrestling contest.

In the wrestling contest, Kingsley Ndubuisi of Amainyi Nta defeated Onyedikachi Nwaege of Umuawaeke Amainyi within five minutes to retain the championship belt.

Ndubuisi received a cash prize of N200,000, while Nwaege received N100,000 for his participation.

The high point of the festival was the traditional pouring of libations and prayers by the three royal fathers at a special hut within the market square, accompanied by the powerful sounds of the Ikoro (traditional wooden drum).

The traditional rulers invoked God’s blessings, ancestral protection, good health, peace and prosperity upon the people, with the crowd responding enthusiastically with chants of “Iseeee!”

The 2026 Mbomuzo Amainyi Cultural Fiesta ended as a remarkable celebration of identity, unity and the enduring strength of the Amainyi people.
